How to avoid ATM Scam

Who doesn’t want to protect their hard-earned money in the bank?  In the first place, you put your money in the bank to get more security and experience some growth for the money you are saving. Right? Most accounts nowadays are being placed in a savings ATM account. We all wanted easier banking transaction of withdrawing money from our account and convenient to our time as well. But along with the increasing use of ATMs, are the protruding crimes along with it. ATM scam has been threatening news to most ATM cards users.  Most banks already took action in preventing ATM scams such as improving their ATM systems. That includes installation of pin pad shields and even daily inspections. For us, customers we take extra caution in using the machine. Here are some few reminders and tips to avoid ATM SCAM:

      CHANGE PIN REGULARLY
KEEP your PIN to YOURSELF ONLY. Do not write them on your ATM CARD.
When entering your PIN always COVER it  with your hand.
Check ATM machines for card readers
Use your ATM Card only in SECURE places.

If you suspect that your account data is compromised, immediately inform your bank and have it replaced. Also, if not used internationally, deactivate international function/connectivity. It has been known that ATM syndicate operates internationally specially in countries such as Taiwan and Sri Lanka that were thought to be behind card skimming operations.

Top Banks in the Philippines

One of the most commonly used landmarks (aside from malls and hospitals) are banks. They are strategically located and are designed to be accessible for customers. Banks also play a vital role in our economic and business systems. They work like a backbone for financial transactions of various activities in our economy. The big influence of banks within the economic financial structure defines somehow the development of a country.

The Philippine banking structure is very dynamic. I had once posted a List of Universal Banks in the Phil.. Aside from that these are commercial banks, thrifts banks and rural banks existing as well. All these banks are licensed by  Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas  (Central bank of the Philippines).

Assets, Deposits, Capitals, Investments, Remittances and Loans are things being considered decidedly on the following top ranking banks in our country:

Banco de Oro

Banco de Oro Unibank Inc is owned by Mr. Henry Sy (under SM Group of Companies). It was the first Philippine bank to claim a milestone of over one trillion asset base. BDO has been known on its famous tag-line “ We find ways”.  They did find ways of extending service to customers by being the first to have banking operations during weekends and even extended hours on a regular banking day.

Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company (Metrobank)

Metrobank is owned by Mr. George Ty. It has big network of about 800 branches and subsidiaries worldwide. Metrobank is one of the most popular banks for me when I was young . They are very famous for this line: “YOU”RE IN GOOD HANDS” in Metrobank.

Bank of the Philippines Islands

BPI is the oldest bank both in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia. BPI is known for its innovation in technology  and even tagged as country’s most profitable bank. BPI is owned by Ayala Corporation and it comprises the largest banking network in the country.

And well, I am proud to work for this bank and we say: “Let’s make it easy”.

Land Bank of the Philippines

Land Bank is owned by the Philippine government and has a very large rural branch networks. Thus, it
provide services especially inclined to rural sectors like our fishermen, farmers and the like. I also observed that most government offices payroll facility is under this bank.

Other top banks include Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC), Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), Philippine National Bank, Unionbank, Chinabank and Security Bank. I hope to feature them on one of my posts.

I will INVEST in Myself

I was browsing over Randell Tiongson’s previous posts when I stopped by reading an excerpt from his book: Invest in Yourself. (By the way Randell Tiongson is one of the aggressive financial gurus/advisers  here in the Philippines)
*Photo grabbed at http://www.randelltiongson.com/invest-in-yourself/

He said and I quote “I believe the best way to earn is to first invest on your best performing asset—You! Improving yourself will be the best way for you to earn better. Have you ever honestly asked the question, ‘Am I investing in myself?’”

And so I asked myself, Am I investing in myself? What are the things that I have done to enhance my skills or improve my self-value and knowledge.  I seldom read books or newspapers. I was even more updated to Showbiz news and Teleseryes (tsk2). Much of my time over the web is spent on reading facebook statuses and twitter updates. I have attended seminars solely because it was a job requirement. Thus, I haven’t invested much time, effort and money in improving myself.  I can only remember learning again when I was teaching last first Semester 2012. I wanted to go back to school and take a Masters degree but then it didn't materialize yet.

So, I think this is a posted CHALLENGE to me today. To invest on my best performing asset : MYSELF. As Randell mentioned on his post, read a lot. Read about leadership, financial articles, news, literature, etc. Take reading materials that can widen your horizon and even develop one’s vocabulary and even writing skills. Take time to attend seminars and talks that would be self-enriching and would add value to you. Converse with a lot of people (those who talk with sense) and engage one’s self to opportunities for growth.

I agree with Randell when he said that the best ever investment one can make is investing on one’s self. I  am accepting this challenge. I will invest on my beloved self. You should too. :)
